General Legislative
The Week Ahead
Just a few notes on some highlights of the week ahead in Montgomery:
Looks like there is the potential for a three day work week in the State House before we adjourn for spring break. That means we will be in session on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This is probably a sign as well that the rumors of a shorter legislative session are accurate. There has been some mumbling in the State House about the session only going until the budgets are passed or at least having it shorter than usual. Having a three day work week so early in the session is a bit unusual so this could be a sign of things to come.
First Week Focus on Budgets
The 2011 Regular Legislative Session opened Tuesday with Governor Bentley’s State of the State address. As expected the primary focus of his remarks were the dire budget constraints we are facing in Alabama. The Governor reiterated what many of us knew was coming—our state budgets are going to shrink.
Samford bingo symposium sheds light on issue
By Alan Collins
BIRMINGHAM (WBRC) - Electronic bingo remains a hot topic in Alabama which is why Samford University's Cumberland School of Law sponsored a day-long symposium on the issue.
It was called "BINGO: Not Just Your Grandmother's Friday Night Social. How Bingo Became More Than Just a Game in Alabama."
"I know a lot of people don't understand the law behind this and why things are being done they way they are," Kevin Coleman, the editor of the Cumberland Law Review said.
Organizational Session Begins on 11th
The Organizational Session for the Alabama Legislature begins on Tuesday at noon, rain, snow or whatever else Mother Nature throws at us. Under statute the Legislature is required to meet so there is no rain delay for those who cannot get there due to weather or a long night celebrating the Auburn national championship game.
